Hmong American Peace Academy is the first Hmong Charter School in Wisconsin to respond to the struggle of Milwaukee Hmong families in maintaining their culture and embracing the best American values as well as providing opportunities for success as productive citizens. To support this mission, Teach for American works to place college graduates in this inner city school to help create a dynamic learning environment.
In conjunction with a Teach for America 2nd grade teacher, Linda augmented their limited art time by demonstrating the connection between art, history, geometry and culture. They did this by creating American Indian totem poles, using geometric shapes as the basis for their animal totems, celebrated by the Indian Culture. The students worked on their individual creations and then joined them together as a community for the final totems, which they proudly displayed to the school.
