Silver Birch of Hammond opened its doors in May 2017 to provide local area seniors with a high-quality, affordable, assisted living community in Hammond, Indiana. The 125-resident senior living facility offers private residences along with a wealth of amenities designed to foster a welcoming, home-like, and social atmosphere. Studio and one-bedroom units are nestled amongst community spaces such as a wellness suite featuring fitness equipment & medical services including in-house physical therapy, a beauty salon & barber shop, an art studio, resident lounges, a library, and a game room. The formal dining room, café, and community room have open access to a patio overlooking a fully landscaped courtyard highlighted by a grove of existing trees and a series of water-purifying rain gardens. The building is situated to maximize passive daylighting and access to nature, both of which play a critical role in the well-being of seniors.
Green building practices are integral to the design, construction, and daily operations of the building by providing connectivity to the larger community, energy and resource efficiency, and a healthy living environment, all of which help to make Silver Birch of Hammond a desirable place to live. The development has earned 2012 National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Silver Certification, which is a stringent third-party verified certification program that focuses on (3) key attributes: healthy homes, lower operating costs, and sustainable lifestyle. Key green features for the project include: neighborhood amenities & public transit access within walking distance, outdoor landscaped walking paths, preservation of existing trees, native landscape plantings, Energy Star rated appliances, energy efficient LED and compact fluorescent lighting, durable, long-lasting, low maintenance materials, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, low VOC interior paints, sealants, carpets, & adhesives, as well as quiet exhaust fans that remove indoor air pollutants and supply residents with fresh air. These features ensure that the residents’ homes will be healthy, affordable, and sustainable for years to come.
Silver Birch of Hammond is WJW’s first completed new-construction project in Indiana, and it provides a welcoming community in Hammond that residents and staff are proud to call home.
