The Beacon Lofts is a prototype for future sustainable loft developments. By salvaging an old newspaper plant, and re-using much of the existing structure of the building, the project breathes new life into what would have otherwise become wasted rubble and landfill fodder. Although not required by local or Federal Law, the Beacon Lofts were designed to meet the requirements of the Federal Fair Housing Amendments Act. Because they are excluded from all accessibility laws, loft buildings have traditionally not been a housing type available to people with disabilities. Beacon Lofts expands the choices of housing for people with disabilities in Chicago.
