Mike, Diane, Heidi and Albert attended the grand opening of the Vince and Pat Foglia Family and Youth Center at the Marillac Social Center. The grand opening event coincided with the Centennial Celebration of the Marillac Social Center – a neighborhood hub of East Garfield Park offering various programs including youth services, child development, senior services, and a food pantry. The celebration was honored by basketball hall-of-famer Isaiah Thomas—a Marillac House Alum, Senator Dick Durbin, Speaker of the House Michael Madigan, Alderman Walter Burnett, and others.
The Family and Youth Center project consists of the adaptive re-use of an existing building owned by Marillac St. Vincet Family Services. In it’s previous life the building was a thrift store and food pantry. In recent years the thrift store closed leaving most of the existing 2-story building empty. With a DCEO grant, as well as private fundraising, Marillac St. Vincet was able to revamp the building to accommodate their growing Youth and Family programs including Project Hope, Hope Junior, and an expansion of the food pantry. In addition to the renovation of the existing building, the project also included building an addition that houses a full-size basketball court and stage. The basketball court will be available for Marillac youth programs as well as available to the larger community for league games and open court time.
